This documentary tells a missing chapter of our nation's record of civil rights. It reveals the movement in Mississippi in the 1950s and 60s from the point of view of the courageous women who lived it. Movie Night: The Killing

On Thursday, June 7th the Jeanes Library will be showing the film "The Killing" (United Artists, 1956). This gripping film noir is the third movie directed by Stanley Kubrick who also wrote the screenplay. "The Killing" has three icons of the film noir genre in its cast-- Sterling Hayden, Elisha Cooke Jr. and Marie Windsor. The program (5:30-8 PM) includes a 15 minute introduction and a half hour discussion afterwards. The discussion will be led by local resident and "film buff", Liz Zietz. There will be substantial "snacks' served at this dinner hour program. Free, but please sign up via our interactive calendar.

The film tells the story of the fallibility of a man and his plans. This is a theme Kubrick explored again in many of his later films including "Fail Safe" and "2001, a Space Odyssey". This film is in the category of noir that deals with robberies gone awry. The plot is developed in bits and pieces, introducing the members of the gang and the roles they will play in the hold-up. After these intros are finished, we see another use of time in terms of how the characters fulfill their function in the robbery. This hard-boiled film has a number of interesting touches, including the use of clown masks in a hold-up.
